Saturday was one of those gorgeous sunny autumnal day you need to make the most off, so we spent it at the grounds of the Parke estate in Bovey Tracey for their apple day.
There's a lovely old orchard full of local varieties of cider, cooking and eating apples. So off we went with our bag to pick apples to take down to the apple press in the yard. Jimmy got to sample some of the fresh juice and went back for as many refills as he could get. He got himself a conker ( honker) and swung it round like he was in a Kung fu film. We went for a walk down along the river and through the woods looking for acorns, mushrooms and stones to splash in the river. The leaves are just starting to change colour and sky isn't yet filled with the sounds of jays squabbling over acorns but the hedgerows are full of berries and it won't be long till the flocks of field fares and thrushes are feasting and the huge oak trees in the parkland are golden.
Sunday I decided to tackle moving around the plants I'm the garden and had to stop every so often to allow the butterflies to get the last drops of nectar from the asters and sedums. I saw my first ever hawkmoth, just like a tiny hummingbird so beautiful, didn't hang around for long, disappeared towards the woods before I could even think about running to get my camera.
